STUDIO UPDATE

The new album is coming along. I've just wrapped up recording with Jim White at his studio outside of Athens, Georgia. Lots of banging on gas cans, chair legs and children's toys. We've rounded third and are headed for home on this thing. Stay tuned...

High powered sour mash and gin-soaked cotton warm the veins of The Last Tycoon’s “Death By Dixie”.

May 20, 2015 adobe and teardrops reviews  Death By Dixie

Adobe and Teardrops gave a rave review of "Death By Dixie".  They compared the   album to the work of one of my favorite fellow Georgian songwriters Lee Baines III. Check out the full review here.

“Death By Dixie is a collection of sharply written, meditative and haunting songs. It celebrates the urbanization and industrialization of the modern South while refusing to forget the liberties and lives sacrificed to get it there. If you think Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires are brilliant but too fucking loud, The Last Tycoon will be right up your alley.”

The through-thread that Gladwin weaves into Death by Dixie is the New South versus the Old … the good, the bad, and the sometimes ugly truths that lurk both on and under the surface of the region and its history.

“Independence Day” by the Last Tycoon (aka John Gladwin of East Atlanta, Georgia) is a brooding, cinematic story, a desert-set film noir in sound and words.

APRIL 13, 2015 UNDER THE GUN REVIEW

PREMIERS "INDEPENDENCE DAY"

The first track from "Death By Dixie" premiered today over at Under the Gun Review. Of the track UTG said:

“The song is an epic aural adventure—sending the listener into an entirely different world. It has a simple sound, but the depth of the track comes with how easily it transports the listener. Enlisting Jim White (David Byrne, Aimee Mann) for production, the sound of the song is almost haunting — a testament to the depths of Gladwin’s songwriting.”

APRIL 9, 2015 NO DEPRESSION REVIEWS

DEATH BY DIXIE

NO DEPRESSION has just released a review of the upcoming record Death by Dixie.

“Death By Dixie is Gladwin’s report on the southern landscape, his taking of the temperature for better or worse, addressing political strife and people strife, the human infrastructure of the south or the lack thereof. The record was built to stir, to provoke your interpretation and not be afraid of what that might be.”
